How can I tell if I need therapy?

Clients come to therapy for many different reasons. Sometimes there is just a feeling of mild dissatisfaction that they can’t quite put their finger on; other times they are deeply distressed by something. Some clients will book a therapy session because they want information about how to respond to a particular situation. Others will begin therapy because they want to make positive, lifelong changes, or because they want to learn more about themselves.

As a rule of thumb, if you would like to see some kind of change in your life, whether it’s about how you think, feel, or behave, or whether it’s about expanding your self-awareness, therapy may be helpful. I offer a brief free telephone consultation that will help you decide if a therapy session might be helpful for you.

Are psychological services covered by the medical services plan of BC?

No. Psychological services are NOT covered by MSP. They are often covered (at least in part) by most extended health insurance plans.

Please note that I do not direct bill insurance companies unless your sessions are being paid for by ICBC. In all other cases you will need to pay for the session with cash, a cheque, or an e-transfer. I will provide you with a receipt that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. I strongly encourage you to contact your insurance company to clarify the nature of your coverage before booking a session.

How long do therapy sessions last?

Each session is scheduled for 50 minutes. I then spend the remaining 10 minutes of the hour writing a note for your file summarizing what we did and what the plan is going forward.

Clients who are receiving EMDR therapy may have sessions that are 90 minutes long. This would be mutually agreed upon before the session.

What are your fees?

My fee is $190 per 50 minute session (the rate recommended by the British Columbia Psychological Association is $200 per 50 minute session). EMDR sessions that are 90 minutes long are billed at the rate of $270.

Fees for other services will be discussed at the time of the request.

What is your cancellation policy?

At least 24 hours notice of cancellation is needed. The full session fee will be charged for missed or cancelled appointments if appropriate notice is not given.

How many sessions do I need? 

This varies depending on your goals. If you are paying for your sessions through an insurance company it is very helpful to know what coverage limits you have so I can tailor your treatment plan accordingly.

What happens during a first session?

When you arrive for your first session I will ask you to complete some brief paperwork that will tell you about the therapy process and that will give me some information about you. During our meeting I will need to ask several questions so I can get a better idea about what would be helpful for you. I will invite you to ask any questions you may have about therapy in general or my approach to therapy. Our discussion will also give us an opportunity to mutually decide if we are a good fit for working together. If either of us feels that you would benefit more from working with a different psychologist I will give you some resources to find one.
